Anesthesiology

The medical team includes the Head of Department, four senior physicians, a further 10 specialists in anesthesiology, one specialist in internal medicine and two resident physicians.

Seven members of our team are specialists in internal medicine, and one member of our team is a specialist in pain management. One of our Specialist Physicians is also a "Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists" (FRCA) in the UK, while another of our Specialist Physicians is also US-board certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine. One of our colleagues has obtained the European Diploma from the "European Society of Anesthesiology", while two further members of our Department are qualified in "Transesophageal Echocardiography in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine", and have been certified by the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin).



The Department can also boast extensive experience and expertise in the field of emergency medicine, with one member of our Department also a specialist in Emergency Medicine, while thirteen of our staff have completed specialist training in Emergency Medicine - five of whom are qualified Emergency Physicians.

Dr. med. Georg Fritz

Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management

Dr. Georg Fritz has been the Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management since August 2006. Following an initial four years of medical training in internal medicine and cardiology, his training in anesthesiology took him to London, Vienna and the Charité Hospital in Berlin, where he spent many years as a Senior Physician in the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Fritz regularly speaks at national and international conferences.

Dr. med. Wilfried Monse

Chief Physician, Anesthesiology

Dr. med. Wilfried Monse has been an employee of the Brandenburg Heart Center since its founding.




In 1978, having completed his medical degree in St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), Dr Monse started his residency at the Charité in Berlin, where he qualified as a Specialist Physician in Anesthesiology in 1983, subsequently working as a Senior Physician. Around 1985, the year Dr. Monse obtained his doctorate in medicine from the KMU Leipzig, Dr. Monse also began to specialize in the field of cardiac anesthesia. In 1990, he moved to the Hospital Berlin-Buch, where he helped to develop a specialist cardiac surgery department which was the predecessor of the current Brandenburg Heart Center. As part of his research work, Dr. Monse has spent time in Wuhan and Beijing (China) as well as Havana (Cuba).

Dr. Monse further developed his expertise in cardiac anesthesia by spending time at a number of different specialist heart centers: the Wellington Hospital London and the Harefield Hospital (UK), the Heart Center in Leuven (Belgium), as well as several German Heart Centers.

Martin Reiter

Senior Physician

Having worked in the Department since 2007, Martin Reiter was promoted to the position of Senior Physician back in 2011.



After completing his medical degree at the University of Würzburg, Martin Reiter started his specialist medical training at the hospital in Berlin-Weißensee, which he completed in 2000 at the hospital DRK Klinikum Berlin-Westend. Since then, he has been specializing in regional anesthesia and postoperative pain management.



Martin Reiter has completed specialist training as an Emergency Physician and further optional training in "Specialist Anesthesiology in Intensive Care Medicine".

Dr. Tobias Sierig

Specialist Physician, Anesthesiology

Having completed my medical degree in Berlin and my residency in Stralsund, I took up my current position as an anesthetist at the Brandenburg Heart Center in 2003.



Aside from working in the operating rooms and in the Intensive Care Unit, I am also a member of the local Emergency Response Services. After completing a dissertation on a molecular biology technique for antibiotic resistance testing in tuberculosis-causing bacteria, I completed my medical doctorate in 2006.

 

Dr. med. Martina Groth, FRCA

Specialist Physician

Dr. Groth is a Specialist Physician in the field of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, and has also specialized in Intensive Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
She has been working in the Immanuel Hospital Bernau's Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management since 2009.



Having completed a degree in Human Medicine at RWTH Aachen University, Dr. Groth started her residency in anesthesiology at the hospital "Maria-Hilf-Krankenhaus" in Mönchengladbach and later completed her training at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK. After completing her residency and becoming a "Fellow of the Royal Society of Anaesthetists - FRCA", she stayed on in Wales, later moving to Germany where she first worked at the Heart Center Coswig, and later at the Greifswald University Hospital, before finally moving to the Brandenburg Heart Center.

 

Dr. med. Lars Engelhardt

Specialist Physician, Anesthesiology

Dr. med. Lars Engelhardt has been an employee of the Heart Center since July 2011.



After completing his medical degree at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Free University of Berlin, he spent over 10 years at the Charité Berlin, working within the fields of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine and completing his doctoral degree with a dissertation in cardiac anesthesia. During his time at the Charité Berlin, he also specialized in regional anesthesia in both his clinical and research work.



A Specialist Physician in the field of Anesthesiology since 2007, Dr. Engelhardt also specialized in Emergency Medicine in 2010, and in Intensive Care Medicine in 2012.  

 

Dr. med. Lutz Janke

Specialist Physician, Anesthesiology

Dr. med. Lutz Janke has been a member of our Department since May 2011. After completing his medical degree in Greifswald, Dr. med. Janke spent 15 years working in "Bundeswehr" (Federal Armed Forces) hospitals - first in Berlin and later in Leipzig, where he was in charge of the Emergency Department. A number of missions abroad substantially contributed to the development of his experience and expertise, particularly in the field of Emergency Medicine. His current fields of interest include cardiac anesthesia as well as further professional training in intensive care medicine.



Dr. med. Lutz Janke completed specialist training as an Emergency Physician in 1995, and qualified as a Specialist Physician in the field of Anesthesiology in 1999. He is also qualified as a Chief Emergency Physician (2002) and a Quality Assurance Officer in Hemotherapy (2006), as well as holding qualifications in Intensive Care Transport (2009), Transfusion Safety Officer (2011) and Radiation Protection (2012).

 

Ulrike Hintz

Specialist Physician, Anesthesiology

Ulrike Hintz qualified as a Specialist Physician in the field of Anesthesiology in 2006, and has been working in the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management since July 2008,

when she also completed her residency in Intensive Care Medicine. 

 

Matthias Lehmann

Specialist Physician, Anesthesiology

Matthias Lehmann joined the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in January 2012.


After completing his medical degree at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin, Matthias Lehmann completed his residency at the State University of New York and the New York University, becoming board certified in both Anesthesiology (2004) and Intensive Care Medicine (2007). Since then, he has been taking part in the continuing education program provided by the American Society for Anesthesiologists. Matthias Lehman worked at the Brandenburg Heart Center between 2005 and 2006, before moving to the Ospedale Israelitico in Rome, Italy, in 2007, where he specialized in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. He has also worked as a locum at different hospitals in Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia. Matthias Lehman places a great importance on the motto of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in his work - "vigilance".
