Career information

Whether you are looking for a career in Nursing and Healthcare Practice or whether you are hoping to become a Surgical Technologist, this section will provide you with relevant information on the type of training provided at the Brandenburg Heart Center.

Who we are

The way in which the Immanuel Hospital Bernau's Brandenburg Heart Center manages to combine the services offered by a typical primary care hospital with those of a tertiary cardiovascular care center is unique within Germany, both in terms of its geographical and organizational infrastructure. The Departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine form part of the primary care services provided, while the Departments of Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology form part of the Heart Center.

The spectrum of services we offer is completed by the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management, which also has an interdisciplinary Intensive Care Unit. Every year, we treat a total of approximately 12,000 inpatients, and in excess of 20,000 outpatients. Every year, over 6,000 surgery procedures are performed at our hospital, thereof more than 1,000 cardiothoracic procedures. Using state-of-the-art technology and methods, more than 6,000 catheterization procedures per year are performed in four catheterization laboratories.

Each of the specialist departments has mentors and specially-trained and qualified instructors available to support and supervise members of staff who are currently in training. These specialists and mentors ensure that we are able to maintain our current high standards in relation to the practical training provided to the next generation of nurses and surgical technologists.

Supporting other careers in healthcare

All training and further training delivered to staff is delivered on the job, incorporates the very latest in scientific knowledge and plays an extremely important role in our hospital. Our hospital is a member of the "Akademie der Gesundheit Berlin/Brandenburg e.V.". Every year, starting on 1st of April, two applicants are offered surgical technologist training placements, and starting on 1st of April and 1st of Octobre, ten applicants are offered Nursing and Care training placements at our hospital. The theoretical part of training is delivered by the "Adkademie der Gesundheit" at their facilities in Berlin-Buch.

The practical part of training can be completed in this hospital or as part of a placement with another healthcare provider that is a member of the "Akademie der Gesundheit". All trainees are supported by qualified instructors and mentors. Members of staff of our Nursing and Care Services have teaching commitments as part of a variety of different courses offered by the "Akademie der Gesundheit Berlin/Brandenburg e.V.". In addition to this, some of our Nursing and Care Services staff are involved in seminars and other training events that are on offer to specialist care staff both within Brandenburg and beyond.

Teaching also means supporting training in other disciplines. The Immanuel Hospital Bernau's Brandenburg Heart Center offers practical placements in nursing and care services for paramedics and emergency care assistants in training, as well as for prospective medical students. We also offer work experience placements for interested pupils from schools within the area. This type of short placement allows young people to get an idea of what work within the nursing and care professions is really like, and may even help them to discover that they were made for a career in health and social care.
