Psychology & Counseling Services

Heart disease and having to spend time in hospital as a result of heart disease can place great strain on both patients and their families. In addition to offering medical treatment, our hospital also provides patients with the option of accessing psychological support.

Psychological support

For many patients, the news that they require heart surgery comes as a shock, and exposes them to an entirely new and unknown situation where they have to deal with feelings of fear, uncertainty and helplessness. Patients who are going through this kind of stressful situation often benefit from emotional support. Psychological support can make an important contribution in that it can make a difficult situation feel more manageable, which can help by improving the patient's sense of wellbeing and facilitate recovery. It is our aim to provide you with the exact type and level of support that you need, and we sincerely hope that you will allow us to assist you.

We offer one-on-one counseling or group counseling that will also include members of your family. We offer special relaxation exercises before and/or after your operation, which can help you cope with stress and gain a better understanding of the issues you are facing, as well as helping you find ways to deal with them. It is also quite common for patients who are suddenly faced with severe health problems to feel the need to make changes to their current life situation, such as wanting to give up smoking, seeking advice on a healthy diet, learning to cope with stress or wishing to resolve conflicts in their personal/working lives.

Support is available to help you make any such changes and, should you require further support following discharge, we can advise you on the type of help that is available on an outpatient basis. Although you will be given the opportunity to let us know during the admissions procedure whether you wish to access psychological support services, you may of course request our services at any point. Just ask a member of our ward staff.
